We believe that all dogs should have the opportunity to have some sort of job as part of their mental well being. There are a huge number of dog sporting activities out there for you to try. Here at Allsorts we love scent work as we have found that it compliments a dogs natural ability to sniff and hunt, can alleviate many stress behaviours and improve their focus around distractions.
We offer two types of regular scenting activities - Nosework and Tracking. Both are suitable for beginners and require no previous experience. As long as you dog likes food or toys, you'll find they will enjoy these courses.

Tracking for Fun

Dogs sense of smell is hard for us to comprehend. Whilst our noses can detect everyday smells, what they don't detect is the thousands of other smells beyond our capability. To put it in to persepctive, Alexandra Horowitz, a dog-cognition researcher at Barnard College, writes that while we might notice if our coffee has had a teaspoon of sugar added to it, a dog could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water, or two Olympic-sized pools worth. Quite impressive. So when you next look at your hound, think about how our world must be to them.
In these training sessions we help you discover what you're dog has know for years, that scent is the map of world for many animals and that by understanding their body language, we can become part of their world too. Tracking sessions are scent specific and enable you to follow your dogs nose to the source. Based all on a long lead, it suits many companion dogs as a solid recall isn't necessary. This is a fun, calming and focus based activity which many owners find as rewarding as the dogs, especially when it's using all their natural instincts.

Nosework

Scent detection, otherwise known as Nosework, is a fun activity for you and your dog. Using your dogs incredible sense of smell, this course will get you working together as a team and identifying scents in boxes, rooms and cars. Perfect for any breed of dog that has a desire to sniff a lot and has a love of food. We're sure you'll love it as much as each other and perhaps want to continue with it as as a regular sport.
